Cotswolds Farmhouse

Set in the heart of a Cotswolds village, this farmhouse hides a secret. What appears to be an old house with a large contemporary extension is a cleverly conceived and beautifully architected new build. We created strikingly stylish, yet practical, interiors to reflect the character of the house and suit our client’s busy family lifestyle.

The Brief

Our clients wanted the interiors to reflect the traditional front and contemporary rear of the house. They enjoyed high tech, open plan living and needed spaces for entertaining friends as well as family relaxation time.

Practical finishes for children, muddy boots and country living were a must, without compromising on style. Storage was a key requirement with extensive bespoke joinery required throughout the house. Whilst the living spaces needed to be family friendly, the master bedroom suite was to have a sophisticated boutique hotel feel.

Design Principles

We designed an open, central staircase leading to a mezzanine study which created a subtle divide between the kitchen and living space whilst cleverly concealing the media unit and TV. Our beautifully-designed bespoke joinery continued throughout the house with playroom storage, living room shelving and dressing room solutions to suit our client’s busy lifestyle.

The separation between the traditional and contemporary architecture was defined by a change in flooring, from heavy York flagstones to pale oak floorboards. To introduce personality, we reflected the owners’ love of skiing and cycling in the fun, quirky cloakroom wallpaper, vintage ski posters and ski pole table lamps. Using colours and textures, we contrasted atmospheres with lighter, contemporary hues for family spaces and richer, deeper tones for the more sophisticated drawing room and master bedroom suite. Upstairs, the soothing tones and elegant interiors created a relaxed, refined environment.
