– Project in Progress –

This exceptional manor house site has been occupied, modified and extended since at least the 13th Century. The current Queen Anne and Georgian family home mainly dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, but retains its own unique octagonal Tudor tower dating from 1519, and an undercroft chapel.

The Brief

Our client commissioned us to update and renovate the house with a sympathetic yet contemporary scheme, and to imagine a new way to connect the house to the guest accommodation they envision for the separate annex building beside the tower.

The unique and challenging nature of the house has required us to commission extensive historical reports and undertake conservation work alongside specialists to fulfil the project and planning requirements.

Design Principles

The brief was to create a relaxed coastal second home for family and friends with facilities for water-sports equipment and changing areas with access to the beach. A music room den for teenagers was included above the guest suite in the converted chapel.

A proposed new glass link connects the guest accommodation to the house, minimising the visual impact on the rear elevation and important Tudor tower.

Studio Hooton were commissioned from the start, producing the full range of technical drawings and specification for the house, including lighting, bathroom, kitchen and joinery designs.
