Vegan Interiors – creating a home with a conscience

Explore our guides on different areas of vegan interior design and create your own beautiful, stylish home with integrity at its heart.

When Meghan Markle painted Archie’s nursery with vegan paint it hit the headlines and put vegan interiors firmly on the map.  Today we can create our own beautiful, stylish home with integrity at its heart.

We’ve compiled a series of articles on everything you need to know about vegan design…

So what is vegan interior design?

Vegan interior design is animal-friendly, human-friendly and planet-friendly.

That means finding alternatives to leather, down, fur, silk or wool as well as no products containing animal derivatives or that are tested on animals. It also encompasses health considerations so you’ll find most vegan products are low or toxin-free. And of course, eco-friendly.

“Demand is being driven by the high-end interiors market so we’re seeing stunning vegan alternatives to animal-based products coming out now,” said Emma Hooton of Studio Hooton.

Incredibly talented and ethical designer-makers are emerging whilst scientists are growing leather from fruit and veg (biofabrication), recycling plastics into beautifully soft textiles and turning trees into luxury duvets. According to Emma, “The plant-based interiors revolution has arrived!”

How do I find vegan-friendly products?

Whilst vegan-led design is on the map, it’s not always easy to source truly vegan products because what goes into a product is not always easy to uncover or trace. Creating a vegan home is a journey that requires extensive research and a level of commitment.

“The secret to designing vegan decor lies in asking questions, sourcing with integrity from ethical companies and commissioning local artisans to create bespoke pieces that complement a vegan home.” said Emma Hooton.

“Vegan design is conscious design. It’s exciting to create beautiful homes that enable our clients to stay true to their values and express them in the way that they live.”

Historic Plasterwork – Craft, care and future legacy
Recently our team spent a day with plaster specialists Locker & Riley. Not simply a factory tour or day out. We visited because we will be working with them on a number of projects this year, and it felt important that the whole studio understood what sits behind the plasterwork we so often specify. It turned into a much broader conversation about responsibility. About what we protect. And what we quietly damage.
